Keystone

I read a blurb today about the NGA meeting and how Jindal brought up the Keystone pipeline.

No, not a political story seed.

But Keystone, just as a word and not a "brand", caught my ear.

Idea; Short Story/RPG session

A village where all homes and businesses have an enchanted keystone above their main entryway, and the enchantment takes care of little things like household cleaning, proximity presence alerting, disinfecting, yada yada yada.  Nothing too powerful, just convenience, much in the way of technological home automation, but magical in nature.

The hook:
Some dastardly fellow with a little skill in magic, discovers a lone cabin deep in the woods, which belongs to one of the villagers.  He notices the keystone as he approaches the cabin and asks the inhabitants about it. They tell him a little bit about it, and how all of their fellow villagers have them, and he wanders on.

He returns to his camp and tells his cohorts about the keystone, and they make a plan to case the cabin and once unoccupied, take the keystone. Having experienced the keystones properties, and knowing there is a nearby village with many more, a plot hatches to separate a few more villagers from their keystones. Once a few more stones are collected, dastardly fellow studies them and discovers that he can enhance their enchantments by applying a bridging enchantment, whereby the more stones bridged, the greater the total effect.

After bridging 4 stones, dastardly discovers;
Cleaning enhancement intensifies to fairly moderate levels of water pressure.
Proximity presence alerting amplifies the range of detection.
Disinfecting amplifies to the point that small insects and delicate plant life can be made to wither.

After bridging 8 stones ...

Obvious plot points ensue.
